The voice coil is the core component of a loudspeaker responsible for converting electrical energy into mechanical energy; it is often likened to the speaker's "heart." Typically consisting of enameled wire wound around a former, its specifications and quality directly determine the loudspeaker's power handling, lifespan, and sound quality.
Under what circumstances can a voice coil be damaged?
Overheating and burnout: This is the most common cause. Excessive input power generates immense heat within the voice coil. If heat accumulation causes the insulation between the coil windings to melt, a short circuit occurs, rendering the voice coil unusable. Consequently, playing audio at extremely high volumes for extended periods is the primary killer of voice coils.

Mechanical damage: While the voice coil moves like a piston within the magnetic gap without directly contacting other components, design or assembly flaws can lead to "coil rubbing" (friction between the voice coil and the magnetic assembly), causing wear over time. Additionally, severe impacts can deform or misalign the voice coil former.

Environmental factors and foreign objects: Magnetic particles—such as dust or iron filings—entering the magnetic gap can jam or abrade the voice coil. Extreme fluctuations in temperature and humidity can also accelerate the degradation of materials, such as the adhesives used on the voice coil.

Material fatigue: Although enameled wire is inherently durable, prolonged high-power operation subjects it to repeated thermal expansion and contraction, which can eventually lead to material fatigue or loose solder joints.

How to Replace a Voice Coil
Step 1: Remove the Dust Cap
Carefully cut along the edge of the dust cap with a blade and remove it. Be careful not to scratch the speaker cone or the voice coil.

Step 2: Remove the Old Voice Coil
Desolder the voice coil lead wires using a soldering iron.
If the voice coil is firmly bonded to the cone or spider, use a hair dryer to apply heat (approx. 65°C) to soften the adhesive.
Slowly rotate and lift the old voice coil upwards to avoid tearing the cone.
Keep the old voice coil to compare its dimensions and impedance with the new one.

Step 3: Thorough Cleaning (Crucial)
Use a blade to scrape away all old adhesive residue from the magnetic gap and the cone.
Vacuum up any debris; ensure there are no foreign objects in the magnetic gap.
Wipe the bonding surfaces with alcohol.

Step 4: Install the New Voice Coil (Most Critical Step)
This is the core step of the repair and determines its success:
Check dimensions: The outer diameter and winding height of the new voice coil must match the old one; the tolerance should be less than 0.1mm.
Insert the voice coil: Place the new voice coil into the magnetic gap.
Center and position: Cut a few thin strips of paper (such as business card stock) and insert them evenly into the gap between the voice coil and the magnet wall to ensure the voice coil is perfectly centered.
Adjust height: The installation height of the voice coil is critical... 80% to 90% of the total height of the coil winding should be positioned below the top of the magnetic core (meaning the majority of the voice coil must be submerged within the magnetic gap).
Check for free movement: Gently push the speaker cone up and down; the voice coil should slide freely without any sensation of friction.

Step 5: Solder the lead wires
Solder the voice coil leads to the terminals.
Pay attention to polarity; reversing the connections will cause phase cancellation.
Keep soldering time under 3 seconds to avoid heat damage to the voice coil wire.

Step 6: Apply adhesive
Apply high-temperature speaker adhesive at the joints where the voice coil meets the cone and the spider (suspension).
Apply the adhesive thinly and evenly; ensure absolutely no glue flows into the magnetic gap.
Use a hair dryer to apply heat for 15–20 minutes to accelerate curing.

Step 7: Testing
Once the adhesive has largely cured, remove the alignment shims.
Gently press the cone to check for any voice coil rubbing (friction or scraping sounds).
Connect to an amplifier at low volume to listen for any abnormal noise.

Step 8: Final assembly
After confirming there is no rubbing and the sound is normal, glue the dust cap back in place.
The process is complete once the adhesive has fully dried.
