How to do home recording

Today I received a feedback video from a customer. After receiving the microphone SM-58, the customer recorded music with friends at home. I really want to share this video with you and some things to pay attention to when recording music at home to improve Recording effect.

A good microphone is very important. The quality of the microphone is related to whether it can record good vocals. So please try to choose the highest standard that the budget can reach. It is recommended to use a good quality large diaphragm condenser microphone or a high-quality dynamic microphone.

Condenser microphones have high sensitivity, can capture details, and often have high-fidelity sound effects. But at the same time, the environmental requirements are more stringent. It should be noted that you need to use 48-volt phantom power on the microphone preamplifier to power the microphone. If power is not supplied in this way, the condenser microphone will not work properly, so make sure that your mixer or microphone preamplifier can provide 48-volt phantom power.

Dynamic microphones are rougher and less sensitive, but provide a more rounded sound and do not emphasize high frequencies too much. They are often used for rock and hip-hop vocals. Dynamic microphones do not require additional 48-volt phantom power. So it will be more convenient to use.
In addition to the microphone, you may also need to choose some equipment, such as a microphone stand, shock mount, pop filter, etc. If your song has a large number of "B" and "P" pronunciations, then the help of the blowout cover will be great, , It can help filter out these blasting sounds, and it will cost you a lot of time and energy to not deal with it later.

The most important thing is that you need a quiet room .There should be no loud noise on the street, no running sounds of computers, air conditioners, fans, etc., preferably in the bedroom or living room.

Vocal distance and positioning

After preparing these, we must install things. The position of the vocal microphone should avoid corners and surfaces that are easy to radiate, and should not be placed in the center of the room.

Do not place the microphone stand exactly in the center of the microphone, and slightly deviate it, aim the microphone at the singer's mouth, about 8-12inch (20-30cm) away, the blowout shield should be closer to the mouth, and slightly angled, do not Parallel to the microphone diaphragm.

But in the end you need to decide which distance is best for you. If in doubt, place two microphones at two distances and record at the same time to see which one works better. When you shift the angle of the microphone to your mouth, the vocal effect will become very different. You can experiment with the microphone placement.

● Close to the nose can reduce the sound of spray and teeth, but it will emphasize the nasal sound.
● Shifting downward will record a lower, less bright sound, because the microphone will sample more resonance from the throat and chest.

Finally, before the official recording, conduct a recording test to listen to different vocal effects.
